I know, I know. Allergens aren’t the most fun topic in the world to talk (or read) about, but when springtime hits and the whole family is walking around with itchy eyes and stuffed up noses you’ll be thanking me for these tips for reducing allergens in your home.
We have 2 kids and a chocolate lab who sheds A LOT so our house needs a steady stream of cleaning/maintenance. It is really important to us to keep things at home maintained because if we don’t we are all struggling with allergies.
This post is sponsored by FilterEasy. Although it is sponsored, I am not being paid to say nice things. Filter Easy and I formed this partnership because we have used their company for many months and we LOVE it. My husband has actually posted about them on his personal Facebook profile. You won’t believe the photos below either… they prove why we use FilterEasy every month!
5 Ways to Reduce Allergens in Your Home
Clean Ceiling Fans
Every few months, your ceiling fans need to be cleaned. Even if you can’t see dust on them you’d be surprised at the amount of dust piled on top of the fan blades!
We also have a tabletop fan in our room that I take apart and deep clean every few months as well. It always grosses me out how much dust our fans are blowing around the house every day!
Tip: Use a pillowcase to clean fan blades that way all of the dust goes right inside of the pillowcase rather than wiping it off the fan blades and all over the floor or furniture below.
Change Your Air Filters
We actually change our air filters monthly. It sounds insane because most people I know do it maybe every few months (probably even less often than that). Let me show you why we change them monthly…
This dirty filter is a month and a few days old. GROSS. Can you imagine how that is affecting our allergies when we don’t change it? So before we signed up for FilterEasy our problem was that we knew that the air filter in our home needed to be changed, but we could never remember to actually do it. At one point we even bought the filters in bulk so that we’d have them and we still forgot to change them out regularly.
My husband saw an ad for FilterEasy and signed up to try it and we probably won’t ever stop using the company. They send us an air filter monthly (you can change how often you get them) and that is our reminder to change the air filter. We’ve been doing it for months and have not forgotten to change it once!

I found this info online and thought it was really helpful:
- Single occupant home with no allergies or pets: change filter every 6-12 months
- Suburban home with no pets: change filter every 90 days
- Add a dog or cat to the suburban home: change filter every 60 days
- Add more than one pet or anyone with allergies: change filter every 20-45 days
Changing your air filter regularly also has other benefits like saving money on your energy bill and preventing costly HVAC repairs.
Clean Under Your Bed
We have hardwood floors so it is really obvious when under our bed gets dirty. The amount of hair and dust that collects under there is disgusting. We have a robot vacuum so we just send him under there to do his job, but before we got him we used this mop to reach under our bed and clean.
Clean Linens and Curtains
This maybe goes without saying, but clean your bedding weekly! Especially if you have pets that use blankets. Also, clean your curtains. So much dust settles onto curtains without us knowing that it is worth it to take the time to clean them.
If you have a dog or cat who has their own bed clean those too. We made sure to buy a dog bed with a removable cover so that it is easier to get it clean.
Vacuum Furniture
Our dog used to sleep on our furniture so I had to make this a priority, but even now that she doesn’t I still vacuum our furniture regularly. Use a vacuum attachment to vacuum your couches and mattresses. The amount of dust and hair that collects here will surprise you!
I haven’t been doing too well on the changing of the air filters front. I’ll get right on it this weekend. Thank you for this incredible information.
