If you know my family, you know that our two chocolate labs are our babies. We treat them just like we would if they were our children and let me tell you, they are spoiled.
Even though we love our dogs a ton, admittedly, I don’t know much about nutrition when it comes to dogs. I’ve always thought that as long as they were getting their dry kibble 2 times per day they were healthy, but it turns out there is a lot more you can do for your dog’s health!
When Side by Side wanted to partner with me to learn more about my dog’s health I said…YES, of course!!
Side by Side is an all-natural line of pet food and treats. They are like no other dog food company I have ever heard of because they recommend that you start out with their Pet Assessment of your dog’s health online and then looks further into my dog’s health. In addition to this, I had a short phone conversation with their Founder, Marney Prince.
The online assessment questions are super simple and include things like your pet’s activity level, their tongue color, and their biological info like their birth date. From there Marney Prince asked me follow up questions during our phone call to help figure out the best diet plan for our pets.
Marney was incredibly helpful on our phone call and taught me a ton about dog nutrition that I had never heard before. Most of what I learned about many of the other pet food options was shocking to me since these other unhealthy options are what is primarily recommended to pet owners, very disappointing.
Overall, Marney was incredibly helpful. Even though I was doing many things wrong when it came to our pet’s nutrition, she was understanding and did not make me feel bad or stupid for what we were currently doing.
You can start with your own online assessment here!
What I Learned About Pet Nutrition
Dog food is just like people food – there are healthy foods and unhealthy foods.
Having your pet eat Side by Side food is basically like feeding yourself a natural, whole food diet. The food has the best natural ingredients and includes things like salmon, duck, and chicken.
Can you imagine the increase in energy levels and overall health benefits that your dog could benefit from by eating a more wholesome diet?
Dogs can eat people food – but only certain kinds.
I have always avoided feeding our dogs people food because I have heard that it isn’t healthy for them, but during my conversation with Marney, I learned that snacks like carrots and blueberries are popular with dogs and really healthy for them also!
Dogs can take supplements and vitamins too.
Our oldest Lab, Harley, has stomach issues which causes her to throw up pretty regularly. We never have figured out the cause but have tried to keep her on a strict diet to keep from upsetting her stomach.
Marney actually suggested a supplement for Harley called Belly Balance that will protect her digestive tract and replenish good bacteria in her stomach and intestines.
Our Assesment Results
Side By Side suggested we start out feeding our dogs their Genial recipe which is beef and salmon. They also sent us some treats for the both that are freeze dried chicken and beef. Our dogs LOVE them.
We are going to try out this diet for both of our dogs and check back in and let you know how it is going!
