It doesn’t matter if you are making a stop for a snack on a road trip or headed for a day out in the park, these road trip snack ideas will keep the kids full and happy!
I used to really struggle with what kind of on-the-go snacks to pack for my kids. Most of the snacks that are known to be road trip snacks are really bad for you, and the last thing I want to do on a 12-hour car ride is fill my kids with sugar.
Last year, we drove from North Texas to Colorado Springs and I was able to feed my toddler only healthy snacks for the whole trip! We are a super well balanced family, and I am totally okay with a little unhealthy snacking every now and then. But for the most part, I like to keep my family eating food that is good for them.
ROAD TRIP TIP: Stop at rest stops along the way to eat your meals and snacks. Everyone gets to refuel, stretch their legs, and release a little energy before heading back out on the road!
Healthy Road Trip Snack Hacks
- Invest in good containers – I purchased round stainless steel containers for cold snacks. They just keep the food nicer and more organized than ziplock bags, and I think that they are easier for kids to handle. Plus, food doesn’t get smashed like they would in a regular ziplock bag. You can also use a bento box!
- Include protein in your snacks – I like to use sliced deli meat (turkey) for this, but protein will help keep your kids fuller for longer.
- Keep it cold – If you use a soft sided cooler, you can easily keep healthy food cold and easy to access for when you stop to eat. Bring gallon sized plastic baggies so that once the ice melts in the cooler, you can fill them up with ice at gas stations along the way!
- If you have to buy food along the way – There are actually a lot of healthy snack options at gas stations. Most of them have a refrigerated area where you can get protein snack packs, carrot sticks, or similar healthy options! We’ve even stopped by the grocery store to grab some of Gerber’s good-for-you snack options like their NEW Organic Popped Crisps, Green & Yellow Crisps!
Healthy Road Trip Snack Ideas for Kids
There are endless combinations of foods that you can use for healthy road trip snacking, but these are our favorites. The containers we have are big enough to fit enough food for several of us to snack on, too.
Gerber® Organic Coconut Water Splashers + Mini cucumbers + Clementines
The NEW Gerber® Organic Coconut Water Splashers are so awesome for kids. I get them from Albertsons and they are non GMO, plus they are packed full of nutrients that kids need in their toddler years. They see it as “juice” and I see it as a great way to sneak in the important nutrients they need!
I usually buy the mini cucumbers for my kids. Less slicing for me because they come in the perfect bite size for kids!
