This is a guest post written by Jane from Bookroo. Jane is one of the co-founders of Bookroo–a children’s book subscription service with a mission of helping more children fall in love with reading, by making reading exciting for kids and affordable and convenient for parents!
One of the best things about children’s books is that you can read them over and over again. But… that’s also one of the not so great things about them if a child latches on to a favorite and wants to read only that one book! To keep reading aloud a fresh and enjoyable experience, one thing you can do is rotate your children’s book collection. An easy way to begin your rotation is to have seasonal books that you cycle through as appropriate. At Bookroo, we spend a lot of time reading children’s books to decide which ones we want to send out, and we wanted to share the fruits of our labors with you by sharing 6 of our favorite fall and Halloween books (both from our childhood and recent discoveries)!
- Where’s Boo?
[Written and Illustrated by Salina Yoon]
This is a fun one for the babies and young toddlers in your life—they can feel Boo’s soft tail throughout the reading as they search for Boo behind a variety of objects!
- Peek-a-Boo
[Written and Illustrated by Nina Laden]
Part of the “Peek-a-________” series of books by Nina Laden, this is a fun spin on the more traditional version you’re probably familiar with. The fun rhymes and minimal words make this another easy one for babies and young toddlers to sit still for, and they’ll have fun guessing what rhyming word is coming next!
- Duck and Goose Find a Pumpkin
[Written and Illustrated by Olivier Dunrea]
This is a more general fall book, rather than specifically Halloween-y. Olivier Dunrea’s illustrations are always delightful and lighthearted, and this board book tells the story of two friends on a search for their very own pumpkin.
- Little Cub
[Written and Illustrated by Olivier Dunrea]
This sweet board book’s illustrations place it firmly in the transition from fall to winter, as it tells the story of two lonely souls, a big bear, and a little bear, who find each other and adopt each other.
- Click, Clack, Boo! A Tricky Treat
[Written by Doreen Cronin, Illustrated by Betsy Lewis]
By the same author illustrator team that brought us the award-winning “Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type”, this is a fun Halloween story featuring those same characters. It incorporates many of the familiar themes of Halloween (pumpkins, costumes, candy, etc.) in a way that also assuages some of the fears children may feel around Halloween!
- The Widow’s Broom
[Written and Illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg]
This is an older book that I remember reading from my childhood. It’s a little bit longer, so best suited for children with a good attention span, and tells a beautifully illustrated story about a widow who inherits an old and almost worn out witches’ broom from a witch she took care of. When the widow learns about the magical properties still possessed by the broom, she teaches it to be helpful around the house, until the neighbors find out about the “evil” broom and try to burn it—the story becomes one of suspense and we wonder if the villagers will be successful at separating these new friends… or not.
If you find yourself always on the look out for good children’s books you weren’t aware of, consider visiting us at Bookroo.com. We get that parents know that they want their children to love to read, they may be less certain about how to go about it. This is where Bookroo comes in. Bookroo is a children’s book subscription service that carefully curates the children’s books we send to your door for a subscription price of less than retail value of the books, but also creates an exciting and positive experience for your child that allows them to associate reading with a gift. Each book comes individually wrapped, and is addressed to them with a handwritten note–who wouldn’t want to read?!
I love Click, Clack BOO! I used to read it to the boys 🙂
I have seen most of these books at my library. I love getting new books for my kids to read, I’ll be checking these out!
We do too! 🙂
Since I’m having my first baby in a month, I’m super excited about finding little kids books to buy and read to DD. I love the captions and I’m going to buy the Widow’s Broom ASAP! Thanks!
I love building our little one’s book collection 🙂
Awesome! We don’t have any of these books, but my kids love to sit with me and read. Thanks for all the great suggestions!
