I’ve always loved to run, but I could never be consistent with it. I’d start on a training program and then life would get busy and I’d just slowly stop going for runs.
This year one of my goals was to be able to run a 5K without stopping and once I started towards this goal I realized that once you are determined to do something, it all of a sudden doesn’t seem that difficult anymore.
I accomplished my goal and then some and now I am planning for my 2018 goal to run a half marathon!
One of the reasons why it took so long for me to really get into running consistently is that there was always something just not right on my runs. I was too hot, too cold, my hair fell out of my ponytail, etc.
There was almost always a reason for me to get irritated and want to quit. Now, I have figured out everything from what I need to wear to what gear I need to take along with me.
To make things easy for other beginning runners who are having the same issue that I had, I am going to share my favorite running gear and why I love it.
This isn’t going to be a post that is unattainable. All of my running gear is extremely budget friendly. I am not typically one to splurge a ton of money on things like this so hopefully, these suggestions will benefit you too!
My Must Have Running Gear
This will be different for everyone and I will go ahead and admit that my shoes aren’t the best, but you must have decent running shoes. I started out running in shoes that left me with blisters everywhere and quickly realized that wasn’t supposed to happen.
I like running in Asics, but plan to upgrade as soon as I have some “splurge” money. Shoes are the one running product that I would recommend splurging on if you can, especially as you start running longer distances.
With that being said, I still do really love running in my Asics.
Believe it or not, I run with good old fashioned Apple headphones that came with my iPhone. Kind of like the shoes, I am sure there are a million products out there that are better, but I don’t want to splurge the money right now and these headphones work just fine!
I do have a pair of SOL Republic Shadow wireless bluetooth headphones that were gifted to me, but I find them extremely difficult to run with. The hard piece that runs around the back of your neck always pulls the headphones out of my ears as I run which is super incredibly annoying.
They are good headphones, I just don’t like them for running.
In the summer I run with minimal clothing. I live in Texas and it is extremely humid and hot so the less the better. This usually means Nike shorts, a tank, and a sports bra for me. I’ll link some options for what I typically wear below.
I actually got my Nike shorts at a thrift store with tags on them for really cheap a few years ago. So if the gear is too pricey for you check resale shops or thrift stores!
The stuff I am linking to is Nike so it is not super cheap, but if you look around most sporting stores have an off brand that is just as great. I know that Academy carries BCG and I get most of my running tanks and leggings from that brand.
Winter is super mild in Texas (at least this year it is). Yesterday was December 20th and I went for a run in shorts and a long sleeved shirt. So I don’t need too much winter gear for running but there are cold days and if I go running really early in the morning it is pretty chilly.
I love running in tights. I have 3 pairs and all 3 are BCG (the inexpensive line from Academy). For tops I just run in a long sleeved Tshirt usually and I also have a running jacket that I wear too.
If it is really cold I wear running gloves and a headband that covers my ears to keep them warm. I couldn’t find the exact ones I have so I linked the Nike brands below, but I actually have the Carrie Underwood versions from Dicks Sporting Goods.
More Links to Everything I Own
I linked similar items above, but will also link all of the specific items that I have as long as they are still available in store!
