Eating healthy for yourself is already hard enough without having to think about how to get your kids to eat healthy too.
Getting your kids to eat healthy is a whole different battle which is almost never easy. Here are are 5 tips on how to get your kids to eat healthy.
Let them see you eating healthy too.
“Monkey see, monkey do”. How many times have you sat down to eat and all your kids want is whats on your plate, not their own. My daughter does this even when we have the exact same thing to eat!
Well next time your kiddos go to sneak a bite off of mom’s plate, make sure to have healthy food to ensure them that you have to eat your veggies just like they do.
Start at a young age.
We definitely do have snacks and treats at our house that aren’t the best for you, but we were sure to make healthy food a regular thing as soon as B was eating real food.
Even though she was so little we tried to give her a wide variety of foods instead of sticking to just a few fruits and veggies that she really liked. I have also always heard that it takes kids about 10 times of trying a food before you can determine if they truly like it or not.
Try it in different varieties.
If you give your children sliced avocados and they don’t like it, next time try mashed avocados as dip with crackers. Or try adding a little bit of seasoning to it so they don’t taste so bland.
For example, my daughter will not eat plain scrambled eggs. If I make scrambled eggs with baby spinach and cherry tomatoes mixed in she loves it!
Mix it into other foods.
If you have tried everything and you kids still won’t eat healthy you can try to mix healthy foods into meals and snacks. We make these three smoothies at home and I add different veggies inside of them:
The best part is that you can’t even taste the veggies once the smoothie is made so not only can you trick your kids, but you can make a deliciously healthy snack for yourself too!
You can also use casseroles for blending veggies into meals without your kids knowing. When we were kids my mom used to puree stewed tomatoes for our chili so that my brother wouldn’t make her pick all of the tomatoes out and he never had a clue that they were in there!
Prepare snacks beforehand.
One of the biggest mistakes I make when trying to stay healthy is not providing quick healthy options for our family. If I don’t peel the kiwi and put them in tupperware or plastic baggies they never get eaten because we are always in a hurry and looking for something quick to grab for a snack.
Having the healthy foods ready to just grab and go helps us stay on track otherwise we just grab something more convenient which often times means a less healthy option.
