I have tried many different planners in the past few years. I tried to digitalize my calendar and that did not work for me at all so I still use a paper planner and have a specific method for how I organize my planner.
I use the Erin Condren Life Planner and I love it! It goes with me everywhere…it took me a while to find one that I really loved, but I will probably be using this brand for a long time 🙂
Planner Organization: Monthly View
I use the month view to map out my monthly tasks that are recurring. So say every Monday for the whole month I will write a post for my site. In the month view I will write “SM POST” (Sunshine Momma post) on each Monday without any specifics.
I do this for everything. If you mop every Tuesday, then write that in the month view each Tuesday. This way I have an overview of how busy I am with my regularly occurring tasks each month.
Planner Organization: Weekly View
The way my planner (Erin Condren Life Planner) is set up it has a weekly view which separates each day and leaves space to write in tasks for that day. This section is where I get more specific with what my tasks are.
I take all of the tasks from the monthly view and write more detail about it. For example, “SM POST” on Monday would be written in the weekly view like this “SM POST – Planner Organization”. So I not only list that I have to write a Sunshine Momma post that day, but I also write what that post is going to be about.
I do this for every site that I write for because I believe that if you fail to plan you plan to fail. If I know what my specific tasks are ahead of time I am much more likely to complete them rather than thinking up a topic to write about on the spot.
My workouts are written out this way too. I write the specific workout that I plan on doing each day. I also write in the specific rooms I am going to focus on cleaning that day.
Planner Organization: Goals
In the monthly view on my Erin Condren planner there is a column to the right that has a space for you goals that month. In that area I keep track of how I am accomplishing those goals.
One of them is the specific amount of posts I am going to post on my site this month so each time I write a post I put a tally mark next to that goal. This way I am actively tracking and working on my goals for the month. It is much more helpful for me to see them every day.
Planner Organization: To Do Lists
Part of how my brain works is that I need to see things being crossed off of a to do list. The way I do this with my planner is by highlighting the specific tasks that I have completed in my weekly view once they are done.
I really love doing this because at the end of the week I can look back and see how productive I was and I can also take the un-highlighted tasks that are not complete and roll them over into the next week if they still need to get done.
