A few weeks ago, we started feeding our dogs a whole food diet using the Side by Side line of dog food, treats, and supplements.
Side by Side is a company that believes in cherishing your pets by feeding them a diet just as healthy as the one you feed yourself. They make premium, high quality dog food in small batches that are tailored to exactly what your pet needs in their diet.
Their recipes are crafted from the best ingredients and carefully blended and packaged. The ingredients provide natural proteins, vitamins, minerals, and fiber to your pet’s diet. The recipes are also created in collaboration with a holistic veterinarian.
Why We Decided to Try a Whole Food Diet
Our two chocolate labs are like our children. We treat them as a part of our family, because they are! In the last year or so our oldest lab (4) has started to slow down and has gained some weight.
Her puppy like energy was basically gone and I know that some of that comes with age, but we thought that she should still be pretty active at 4. She also has an extremely sensitive stomach, which we discovered when she was young, that some dry kibble brands would cause her to throw up.
Because of this, searching for a dog food that works for her has always been a little tricky. I didn’t even know that whole food diets existed for dogs until I was introduced to Side by Side. As you can read about in my previous post I took a short online assessment and spoke to the founder of Side by Side, Marney Prince, to find out what type of food would work best for my dogs.
After speaking with Marney, I felt more confident in what I knew about pet nutrition and how I would handle it moving forward. We received our final assessment from Marney and from there, began to feed our dogs 2 different types of whole food diets.
First things first, our dogs LOVED the taste of Side by Side pet food. The first time I made it they were standing at my feet begging (I am assuming they could smell it). They now know when I head to the kitchen to prepare their meals and are chomping at the bit to eat!
Our younger dog, Milo, has always been a fast eater (like freakishly fast), and Harley has actually kept up with Milo while eating their new food. She loves it that much!
I had never prepared freeze-dried dog food before, so I will admit I was skeptical at first and thought it would take too much time, but it was so easy.
It does take a little longer than feeding a scoop of kibble, but all you have to do is add about a cup of warm water to the food, break it up and then it is ready to serve!
The most surprising thing to me is how much it looks like real food!! Of course, it is all blended together, but you can totally see the bits of veggies in there.
The biggest change that I have noticed since switching to Side by Side is in our oldest dog’s energy levels. Like I mentioned, she was starting to get pretty lazy and in the last few weeks I have noticed her willingness to get outside and play increase.
She has also lost about 5lbs which she needed. I don’t know if it is a result of the food or the increased activity levels, but either way it is helping!
I assure you Harley is not being choked during the hug in this photo, although it looks like it LOL! It is one of a series of photos and they were both wiggling around and kissing each other.
Our younger dog is still a puppy, so he has no issues with energy that is for sure, but his new food has stayed consistent in helping him fill out just as a growing lab should.
So far our results with Side by Side have been incredible and we are hoping to continue using their food for as long as we can.
My favorite part of our initial reactions to the food was my husband and I reading the ingredients list on the dog food bag. We were so shocked! Here is what their meals include:
- All-natural proteins including chicken, duck, beef, rabbit and fish.
- Ground bones and organ meats such as hearts and liver.
- Vegetables including vibrant greens, carrots & sweet potato, fruits such as apples, and healthy fats, herbs and supplements
